Worked example: one order, including delivery

A product costs R80, packaging costs R10, and delivery costs R40. You charge the customer R40 for delivery. With a 3% payment fee and a 25% target margin, the total needed is R180.56. The product price is R140.56, with R40 delivery added. The estimated fee is R5.42 and the profit is R45.14. These are example figures, not a recommendation for a particular business.

Margin and markup are different

Margin is profit divided by the amount received. Markup is profit divided by cost. A R100 cost sold for R125 gives a 25% markup but a 20% margin before other expenses. This calculator targets margin on the full customer payment, including delivery.

How the calculation works

Total payment = (product cost + packaging + delivery cost + fixed fee) / (1 - payment fee rate - target margin rate). Product price = total payment minus delivery charged. The total is rounded up to the next cent, then profit is recalculated from that total.

Check the costs you enter

Include labour and other costs attributable to the order in your product cost. Use the fee that applies to your payment method. Percentage fees are assumed to apply to the entire payment, including delivery. The calculator does not separately calculate VAT, refunds, discounts, or monthly overheads; include relevant amounts in your costs where appropriate. If delivery charges alone already exceed the required total, review the inputs rather than using a negative product price.
